Its important to also consider that the graph may not be indicative of increased natural catastrophes, but increased reporting of catastrophes – that is, improved satellite surveillance and improved communication with secluded areas means that a storm or flood gets recorded today that may have been missed in 1983. It should also be considered that there appears to be a tendency to declare weaker events as “catastrophes” when they are in inhabited areas – meaning that the shift could also be in area rather than quantity.
