Ever since I worked on setting up the Sydney Harbour webcam back in 1998 (one of the first robotically controlled webcams around), I’ve been fascinated with how they can be used to generate interest.
For the new millenium and the Sydney Olympics we did some massive webcasts of the fireworks using these webcams. Back then there weren’t that many other webcams in the world and other than the NY Times Square one, few which covered New Years Fireworks displays. Its good to see that the trend of being able to watch the new year come in around the world via webcams has grown and Earthcam are again hosting a special webcast of a whole series of new years webcam broadcasts.
If you go here on New Year’s Eve you can see the new year in across the world.
Unfortunately, I don’t think Sydney is included as the Sydney Harbour webcam gave up doing webcasts of the fireworks back in 2001/2. But one of the other webcams in Sydney might be included, or you can still log onto The Rocks Sydney Harbour webcam and see if you can view them – though odds are some idiot will grab control of the webcam and point it at the Passenger Terminal toilets.
