Cairns announced last week that it will be the first airport terminal in Australia to fully operate with bar coded boarding passes (BCBP). These boarding passes replace the magnetic strip types – the move paving the way for greater use of web check-in, passengers printing their boarding passes from home or even on their mobile phones.
Perhaps the greatest benefit at the moment though is that they can store information from multiple segments and carriers on a single pass. Gone will be the days of travelling with dozens of boarding passes and fishing the wrong one out when you go to board a flight.
Cairns airport has used AirportConnect Open technology from SITA in its newly re-opened domestic terminal. This sytem allows all airlines to issue the BCBP’s even if their own systems have not been upgraded to handle them.
This initiative is part of the $200 million Cairns Airport redevelopment, the first major milestone of which was achieved late last year with the opening of the combined check-in area. They also opened the first stage of the domestic retail redevelopment in December with a combined NewsLink/Discover/Hub Convenience store, designed as a free-flowing space to increase cross purchasing.
