The Gamified Journey: How Behavioral Design is Transforming the Psychology of Travel

Travel isn’t just about going somewhere anymore—it’s about becoming someone. The quiet revolution of gamification is reshaping how we experience destinations, and smart marketers are already playing several moves ahead.

Fish Valet at Vancouver Airport?

I’ve heard of some strange things at airports but having a valet for fish is about as curious as having one for wedding dresses – which Vancouver also has. The purpose of the fish valet? He makes sure your fishy delights are cared for and safely chilled if you’re stopping over in Vancouver between flights.  […]

Grazing food at airport

I’ve always been a big believer in grazing food at airports – small servings which people can eat & run or eat as they walk around. Not only does it reduce the amount F&B cuts into the shopping dwell time but it basically encourages people to spend more because you don’t notice a number of […]

Worst airport display?

I think this one from Narita airport gets my vote for this week.

Duty Free promotion at Melbourne Airport

Melbourne Airport ran a Duty Free promotion this Christmas and must and delved back into the archives to come up with this idea… I don’t know if this was orchestrated by Nuance or by Melbourne Airport itself but I’m assuming it was Nuance. People got into a sealed wind box with duty free vouchers of […]

A sense of place?

Well I guess you can’t criticise this Souvenir concession at Minneapolis St Paul Airport for not having a sense of place. A sense of taste though? One thing though is that souvenir stores aren’t meant to look classy. Its not the way the product category generally works. In fact in so many cases in airports […]

Weird airport art

Not sure which airport this is at, it came from Twitter. I assume its Nebraska or somewhere similar. Odd…..

Sponsored airport gates

Airports are always looking for new ways to make money, improve wayfinding and make the airport experience more enjoyable. This example from Taipei creates some interesting ideas. I don’t know whether the airport is generating revenue from Hello Kitty branding these departure gates or whether they’d doing it purely as something fun. But consider for […]

Mobile Shopping carts at Changi Airport

Changi have a number of these to service duty free, post, food etc. They’re a terrific idea to tap into that lost PSR when people go to the departure gates early. Or in Changi’s case to deal with shopping for short transit stops. Image Credit

The Future of Sydney Airport

Many have wondered what the future holds for Sydney Airport.  There’s now a taskforce formed to provide input to the government, investors watch anxiously…. but now the answer is known from Sydney Airport itself The future of Sydney Airport is ………  a server error & missing output devices.

Smiggles at Gold Coast Airport

New store opened by Lagadere at Gold Coast Airport. Very large for a Smiggles store – wonder what it will end up turning over?. My guess – about $500k. Which wouldn’t be too bad for GC.

Langugage Vending Machines at Vegas Airport

I love vending machines but I’m not too sure about this one at Vegas Airport. It dispenses language pack/CD’s by Rosetta Stone. I would have thought the usage was far too narrow to justify the space.

Texas Airport

Well I guess it gives a sense of place at Texas Airport – if not a sense of good taste….

A strong sense of place.

2nd hand comic books at Milwaukee airport

Milwaukee airport has a second hand bookstore which also sells used comic books. Its an unusual usage for an airport but I guess in a domestic terminal it might go very well. The problem of course is that it looks junky which would make most airports knock the idea back. That might be short-sighted […]

Superman’s Fortress of Solitude – obviously

Poker machines at Airports.

Where else but Vegas – poker machines in the airport. The airport makes around $40million in revenue per year from these machines and obviously the longer the delays at the airport the more the revenue. Other airports are also planning to introduce slot machines though in most cases it requires legislative change. Miami are planning […]

Massage pods at Johanesburg Airport

Not too sure about this idea. Apparently you can get a full body “wet” spray massage fully clothed. Haven’t worked out exactly how you manage that and frankly I’d be too wary to try it out.
