barcelona1With the new Barcelona Airport T1 due to open in matter of days, I thought it worthwhile taking a look at what it will contain.

Firstly to put some context on this, the terminal is designed to cater to 25 million passengers. To begin with, Star Alliance flights will move to the terminal, One World following in September and, before the end of the year, they will be joined by those belonging to the Sky Team.

There are 256 FIDS & 14 passenger service points in addition to over 1,000 wayfinding signs.

166 Check-in desks, 101 boarding gates and 43 airbridges.

The terminal has been constructed to deal with a whole raft of mobility issues (as well as people just being plain tired) and has 49 moving walkways, 26 mechanical ramps, 48 escalators and 125 elevators.

The retail space comprises 23,800m2 which consists of 51 shops and 30 F&B outlets, a bank office, 16 ATMs and 5 car hire locations. There is also space for expansion to 73 retail outlets & 43 F&B over time. There is an additional 2,500m2 dedicated to passenger services – a business centre, gym, hair salon and spa plus four VIP lounges – this will increase to 6,000m2 in VIP lounges over time.

The terminal has WiFi of course but it does not appear that it is planned to be free.

In the car parking area there are 11,000 public parking spaces added for T1 plus 1015 long stay spaces and 1,000 VIP & contingency parking spaces.

When Feasibility Stops Being Feasible

The model is sound. The assumptions have been stress-tested. And the project is still harder to deliver than the numbers suggested. The problem isn’t the modelling. It’s what the model assumes about the world.

Status and visibility still matter in luxury. But alongside them, something else is strengthening. The brands that understand the difference are building something more durable.

Luxury as Signal, Luxury as Sanctuary

Luxury has always communicated something beyond the object or experience itself. Status, taste, access, position within a hierarchy that does not need to be made explicit to be understood. These signals are embedded in brands, materials, locations, and the particular...

Luxury isn't collapsing under pressure. It's reorganising around a different kind of strength. Here's what that actually means.

Luxury Under Pressure

Luxury has always operated by a different logic than the rest of the market. Where most consumption responds to price, luxury responds to meaning. The relationship between cost and demand runs in directions that conventional economics finds awkward. Price increases...
