Its been a long time since we’ve really seen anything “different” in airline seating, but Delta’s new Staggered seating has the potential to create real change in economy cabins.

Delta will soon have new seats in their coach or economy class cabin, collectively called “The Cozy Suite”. This seating configuration was designed by Thompson Solutions‘ with the intention of giving passengers a more comfortable, “snoozable” ride. The seats’ design is the result of a nearly 7 year process of research, experimentation, and testing by Thompson Solutions. According to Wired:

[Thompson] started by observing passenger behavior on both short- and long-haul flights. Thompson’s Brian Rogers says the design team came away with two main findings: passengers trying to sleep on long flights tend to position themselves at an angle, and those sitting at the window seat generally seem slightly less miserable because they can rest their head against the wall.
